Why does EV charging performance drop in winter?
A cold battery charges more slowly
The chemical reactions in lithium-ion batteries slow down at low temperatures. This is why both range shortens and charging time lengthens in cold weather — it's not a fault in the vehicle or the station, it's the battery's natural behavior.
Use pre-conditioning if your vehicle has it
Many modern EVs have a "pre-conditioning" feature that warms the battery before charging begins. This usually activates automatically when a charging station is set as the navigation destination, and improves charging speed.
The station side can also be affected by cold weather
Outdoor charging units may also temporarily limit performance in extreme cold to protect their power electronics. This typically resolves on its own as temperatures rise; a persistent drop should be reported to field support.
