Why is my EV charging speed low?
Three factors determine charging speed
Actual charging speed is set by the lowest of three factors: the maximum power your vehicle can accept, the power the charging station offers, and the battery's current state of charge. So even when connected to a high-power station, speed stays capped if the vehicle accepts less.
Battery state of charge directly affects speed
Most EVs charge fastest between 0-80% battery level; beyond 80%, charging speed is gradually reduced to protect the cells. This doesn't mean the unit is faulty — it's the battery's normal protective behavior.
Temperature and cable/connection condition
In very cold or very hot conditions, the battery management system may restrict charging speed for safety. A loose connector or a damaged cable can also reduce power transfer — in this case, a field team can measure and verify the connection points.
